New Zealand is a country known for its stunning landscapes which have been made popular through many films time and time again. Found to the south of Australia, the country has quite a small population making it the ideal destination for those who want to escape the masses. The archipelago consists of two main islands and several smaller ones. While the country’s famous cities attract many tourists, lesser known spots such as Dunedin also have plenty to offer.
The St Clair Beach in Dunedin, which sits by the Antarctic, is one of the most popular beaches in the country. It is a terrific surfing spot that is suitable for veterans as well as novices. The beach is highly developed and one can find plenty of bars and restaurants along the seashore. Together they can cater to every mood and occasion. St Clair Beach is also the site of Dunedin’s ‘Midwinter Plunge’, which is an annual event where beachgoers rush into the waters during the winter solstice. While the waters here are generally cold throughout the year, it is particularly chilly during the winter months.
Those who do not want to wade into the cold waters can head over to the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool which is situated on the southern part of the beach, near Forbury Hill. The large open air public pool was opened in 1884 although it did not receive heating until the 1960s. The salt water swimming pool is situated just metres away from the ocean and swimmers are treated to spectacular views. The pool is open every day but one has to pay an admission fee to get in. The pool is only 1.4 metres deep at its deepest point making it safe for children as well.
Foreigners planning on touring the entire country should consider getting accommodation with a hotel chain as it ensures consistency and reliability of service. The Millennium & Copthorn Hotels NZ has several New Zealand hotels found in convenient locations throughout the country. From their Rotorua to Auckland to Dunedin hotels guests will be able to count on the same elegantly decorated rooms and excellent service to make them feel at home.
