Maldives is a timeless destination. There is something to do no matter what time of the year you visit; and the weather is mild, warm and picture perfect all year through. However, if you have one specific activity in mind to try in Maldives – and that activity is not snorkelling – then seasons come into play. Surfing is one such activity, that is highly dependent on the seasons of the year.
Maldivian weather is determined by two monsoonal seasons: the Northeast monsoon and the Southwest monsoon. While this does not affect the functioning of the tourist industry, nor the business of a single Resort, Maldives as a collection of atolls goes through many changes. The direction of the waves, the swimming of the fish, all change with the monsoons. For the surfer, the season begins in late February. This lasts through most of the remaining year until mid-November. Within this surf season itself, there are two highly favoured sub-seasons. From April to October, swells become perfect in the Northern atolls. From February to April, this is in the Outer atolls. The swells could rise up to ten feet during the season, making it quite an adrenaline rush for the enthusiast.
If you are planning on visiting Maldives for surfing, you would know when you will go. In that case, there many prominent hotels including PER AQUUM Niyama Maldives have offers for early reservations. As your trip is not likely to depend on other factors, it is a good way for you to save some on accommodation and spend it all on one of the many surf shops located on the coasts of popular surfing atolls. However, do not attempt to purchase your surfboard from Maldives itself, as the amount of quality products here is on the lower end of the spectrum.
