Bar Reef is the jewel of Kalpitiya’s crown and a diver’s paradise located a mere 3 hours from Sri Lanka’s international airport. Unique due to its continued growth through recent rises in global sea temperatures, Bar Reef was declared a marine sanctuary in 1992 and boasts a fantastic biodiversity of more than 150 types of coral and 280 fish species. Pristine conditions make for incredible viewing of the beautiful array of marine wildlife which is sure to amaze even the most experienced diver.
It was only until 1999 that the Asian Development Bank declared Bar Reef part of their Special Management Area and the result is a spectacular underwater haven perfect for divers from around the world.
With my PADI license in hand (and girlfriend in tow!) I recently visited the Kalpitiya peninsula to indulge in the diving delights which Bar Reef had to offer. Staying at an idyllic ocean hideaway called Palagama Beach, I was able to unwind in luxury accommodation. During my daily diving excursions, my other half could relax by the gorgeous infinity pool or treat herself to one of their spa treatments.
For those who wish to keep their heads above water, dolphins and whales make regular appearances around the Kalpitiya peninsula. During the high season (November – April) Palagama Beach also offers early morning expeditions in search of the marine wildlife that inhabits the nearby waters. On one such trip, an early 6am start was rewarded with the unforgettable sighting of a school of 8 dolphins playing in the water near our boat – a moment that shall live long in the memory.
The Kalpitiya peninsula is certainly an area of Sri Lanka with it’s best years ahead of it and with the upcoming high season nearly upon us, the next few months are an ideal time to visit.
For anyone interested in exploring the waters of Kalpitiya and the corals of Bar Reef, this area of Sri Lanka is fast becoming one of the island’s most popular diving hotspots featuring many Sri Lanka resorts. While there are many tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, diving is growing at an exponential rate with the establishment of experienced schools who provide expert advice and excellent safety equipment to cater for divers of all abilities. Palagama Beach offers a charming mixture of accommodation, ranging from romantic beach cabanas to captivating villas to provide an ideal Asian getaway.
