Sri Lanka, being a sunny tropical island of the tip of India’s south coast, sees an abundance of globe trotters making their way from colder parts of the world such as Europe, Australia and North America, who are all in search of warmer climes and access to inviting, sandy beaches that give way to clear, sparkling waters, perfect for a little fun in the surf. Negombo, a town which lies close to forty kilometres north and is approximately a fifty-minute drive away from the commercial capital of Colombo, offers eager tourists the promise of good food, supreme relaxation, and more importantly for the thrill seekers, great fun in the water. For those holiday-goers whose idea of fun leans more towards engaging in a myriad of adrenaline pumping water sports rather than spending the days just lounging along the beaches in Negombo, Sri Lanka hotels, of which there are aplenty in the area, such as Hotel J Negombo among many, many others, often offer guests access to water sports activities, or at least help guide them in the right direction with regards to finding nearby, independent water sports operators.
Examples of water sports activities that are usually available are jet skiing, banana boat riding, kite surfing, traditional surfing, boogie boarding and diving. For activities such as kite surfing, local watersports centres have advised that Negombo’s waters are more suitable for intermediate to advanced enthusiasts, rather than for complete novices; especially for those planning on heading out into the water to ride the waves during the first three months of the year, from January to March. Certain independent water sports centres operating in Negombo also offer specialised tours to other destinations whose waters are also highly conducive for engaging in water sports, such as Kalpitiya, which is around a three-hour drive away.
