If you are planning to explore Sri Lanka’s south coast, then look to add Calido Beach in Kalutara to your itinerary; it’s a small beach area where one can soak up laid-back coastal vibes.
Getting There
Uniquely located at a point in between the Indian Ocean and a river known as the Kalu Ganga, Calido Beach is within a 10 minute drive from Mermaid Hotel & Club. It can be found in the city of Kalutara around 40 km from the commercial capital, Colombo.
Time at the Beach
The word “Calido” is Spanish for “warm” and this beach offers a place in which to bask in the sun and dip your toes in the warm waters of the ocean. Easy to reach from Kalutara hotels in the area, it provides a place where one can just watch the world go slowly by.
Some Kite Flying
Sadly due to coastal erosion, Calido Beach is not as big as it used to be though it’s still a good place to try some kite flying too. August is a great month for this activity and depending on when you visit you may catch sight of lots of kites being flown against a backdrop of a magical sunset.
Complementing the Experience
The ideal complement to your visit to Calido Beach would be to take a boat ride along the Kalutara River. Also within easy reach are the Kalutara Chaitya which features a hollow stupa and the Kalutara Bodhiya with its sacred Bo tree, well worth checking out when here.
