Synonymous with whale-watching and vibrant nightlife, Mirissa is fast becoming a popular surfing destination along Sri Lanka’s southern coast. It is home to a range of surfing spots ideal for both beginner and advanced surfers.
Mirissa Beach
This semi-circle-shaped, protected beach stretch boasts azure waters and a relaxing shore, fringed by eateries and several stalls for renting surf gear. Mirissa Beach is the ideal spot for beginner surfing enthusiasts as the waves are mild and manageable. The beach is easily accessible from many hotels in Mirissa, including boutiques and villas the likes of Sri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa.
Mirissa Reef
Head west on Mirissa Beach to reach the reef break, tucked between the verdant coconut headland and a large sea boulder. Surfing here is recommended for intermediate surfers and above as it is risky. The area features shallow waters and a plethora of sea urchins on the rocks beneath. As such, be mindful of where you place your feet when paddling out to surf.
Mirissa Harbour
Advanced surfers can venture to the harbour area of Mirissa Beach for faster, barrel, hollow-like waves that climb to 6-8 feet. The waves, however, are not strong and can easily rip.
Weligama Beach
Weligama Beach is an ideal spot for beginner surfers, located 15 minutes away from Mirissa. A beach break sits in the centre of this crescent-shaped bay, interspersed with tiny islets. The beach breaks divide into primary and secondary swells.
