The Southern coast of Sri Lanka is heaven on Earth, without the slightest sense of exaggeration. To have the most pristine beaches bordering turquoise waters is truly a blessing, and visitors flock to the south each year in numbers. Here’s what you need to know about the coast.

The currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). The conversion rate goes as 305-330 LKR: 1 USD/Euro or 200 LKR: 1 AUD (this may frequently change due to the economic turmoils in the country). You can buy SIM cards and data packages at the airport itself, or a telecommunication outlet. The best way to get around the country is to hire a vehicle, but if you want a truly authentic experience, travelling by bus or tuk to the south coast is the best.
Best Time to Visit the Country
The peak travel period would be between December and February when the rain is less. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit during the rainy periods, rough as the seas may be, there are still plenty of shielded bays that are safe to swim in.
Where to Stay in the South Coast
The most popular areas to visit on the south coast are Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa and Weligama. A Weligama Beach Hotel in these regions, such as the Parangi Weligama Bay is the most frequented option for visitors. These places have the best beaches along their borders and are generally a great deal of fun to stay at. It is best to book one hotel and do all your travelling from there along the south coast.
