If you are looking for a tropical beach paradise with the right mix of quiet and energy, Phuket’s Bang Tao Beach is the place to be. One of the longest beaches on Phuket Island, this beach is 8 kilometres of peaceful sandy shores with little to no crowd and only the sound of the lapping waves. If you’re considering a visit to this idyllic spot, here’s all you need to know about Bang Tao Beach.
The History of Bang Tao Beach
The Bang Tao area was formerly home to several tin mines which were the source of Phuket’s wealth. But with the reduction in tin and rubber prices in the 70s, the mines were eventually closed leaving the area in a desolate state. That’s when Bang Tao was transformed into a tourist destination as a prime source of income. Over several years, the former mines were transformed into the idyllic lagoons and parks that make it a prime vacation spot today.
Presently, Bang Tao is considered to be a high-end destination in Phuket with plenty of Bang Tao Beach hotels, resorts and restaurants that cater to the needs of modern tourism.
Southern Bang Tao Beach
The southern part of Bang Tao Beach features several freshwater lagoons and canals with 1000 acres of well-landscaped park. This part of the beach includes many of the hotels and resorts like SAii Laguna Phuket, that provide tourists with comfortable accommodations for their stay. The area also features residential living spaces and apartment complexes for long-term arrangements.
Northern Bang Tao Beach
By contrast, the northern part of the beach retains its natural aura with nothing but sandy beaches and the sounds of the lapping waves. This area is popular on Sunday afternoons with families playing in the waters and enjoying barbeques. The northernmost curve of Bang Tao Beach naturally merges with Layan Beach and Gata Island.
Things to Enjoy in Bang Tao Beach
There are plenty of activities to enjoy along the sands and in the waters of Bang Tao Beach. With beautiful lagoons on full display, kayaking and sailing are prime ways of exploring the beautiful waters. Bang Tao is also home to many diving centres that organise guided diving and snorkelling tours for those wanting to explore the depths of Bang Tao’s waters. If you prefer staying away from the depths you can still enjoy the sandy shores on horseback thanks to the Phuket International Horse Club located in the area.
