Hong Kong’s corrugated coastline, according to some estimates, has about a hundred well sheltered beaches that are safe for swimming. Among them is Repulse Bay which was associated with pirates in the mid 19th century. It is now one of the most expensive residential areas in the territory. Once the pirates were under control the bay was gradually developed into a beach and a bus route created to attract visitors, which is now Hong Kong’s oldest bus route. A beach enrichment programme in the 1920s saw the widening of the sandy stretch that turned the beach into a golden crescent of sand that is thought of as the territory’s prettiest and most orderly beach and gives the Repulse Bay area its resort like feel. The surrounding area was prohibited to developers until the 1970s and 80s.
As the best beach in the territory, Repulse Bay has not suffered the fate of poor water quality that has caused problems in several other beaches in Hong Kong. The blue water of the area is a comfortable 16 to 26 degrees centigrade most of the year inviting swimmers to take to the water. Shark prevention nets, floating platforms and lifeguards on duty in the summer make it a safe and popular place. Water skiers are often seen in the less constricted area beyond the shark nets. Extensive visitor facilities among which are beach volleyball courts and barbeque pits make it a welcome place for gatherings of family and friends. Colonial style buildings nestling in the hills overlooking the bay, designer shops and award winning restaurants and great bars that dot the area attract many who venture out to get away from the busy city and from the humid summer heat. Almost all beaches facing west offer up beautiful sunsets and Repulse Bay is no exception. What better way to end a long summer day than watching the sun slip below the waves in a blaze of colour. Located in the south of Hong Kong Island, Repulse Bay has Deep Water Bay to its east, Middle Bay and South Bay to its west. They are easily accessed from the area.
