Best time to visit
The dry season which extends from October to May is when it is ideal to vacation on Kalpitiya Beach. This is because you will enjoy water sports like kayaking, canoeing, snorkelling and windsurfing while for dolphin and whale watching expeditions off the coast, anytime between December to mid-April will serve you well.
Getting there
Kalpitiya Beach is a 3-hour drive from Colombo but if you want to try out public transportation in Sri Lanka, then you will be able to board any of the buses plying along the Colombo – Puttalam road. Although, understand that the 1st part of your journey will take around 4 hours to complete and from Puttalam, you can hail an air-conditioned bus that will have you dropped off at Kalpitiya.

Aside from the water sports which is a major reason to holiday in this part of Sri Lanka, visitors can also make good use of their time going boating on the Kalpitiya Lagoon where views of the Beach will never be too far away. Further, you can schedule a jeep ride in the evening that will have you navigating the dunes en route to settling down to glorious panoramas of the setting sun.
