Hikkaduwa, or lovingly called “Hikka” is a gem of a beach resort town located 98 km south of Colombo. If you think that golden sands and bright blue waters is the only highlight of this town, you’re in for a surprise as there’s action and adventure awaiting you here. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, book one of the many Hikkaduwa hotels sprawled along the beach like the popular Citrus Hikkaduwa, and head over to Hikka to get caught up in adventure and action!
Out of the many adventurous activities Hikkaduwa is famous for, snorkelling is among the top, and that is because the beach resort town has a vibrant Coral Sanctuary home to seventy varieties of multi-coloured corals! The reef is spread out a couple of hundred meters offshore from Hikkaduwa’s shore. The water is just a mere 3 or 4 meters deep and is crystal clear so you can easily see colourful corals and schools of tropical fish swimming about. If swimming is not your thing but you still want to see these beautiful corals, don’t fret as you can hire a guided glass-bottomed boat to view the corals.
After snorkelling it’s time to get that adrenaline pumping with some serious surfing! Hikkaduwa is a popular surf spot among both the local and international surfers. There 3 to 4 surf points here and they all have clear, warm waters while the wave size ranges from 2 to 7 feet during the season which is 6 months from November to April. For those who are not experts in surfing there are many surf schools like Reef End Surf School, to enlighten you on the art of surfing.
Embark on adventurous canoe rides along the Hikkaduwa Lake. As you ride your canoe along the tranquil waters you will get to meet flocks of birds of various species- migratory and endemic; chattering monkeys hanging on trees, and giant Monitor Lizards!
After all that adventure why not go hunting for lunch? Hikkaduwa is renowned for deep sea fishing tours from which you will be able to fish the big names in West South Coast deep-water fishing such as Mackeral, Kawakawa, Trevally, Shark, Marlin, Tuna and many more!
