The chance to spot whales in their natural habitat is a truly remarkable experience and here’s more on such escapades which can be enjoyed in Mirissa.
Location & Period
Located along the south coast, Mirissa is a charming town in Sri Lanka; boutique hotel options with villas can be found right by the beach and are ideal for travellers. The best period for whale watching here is from November to April and since this also coincides with the peak season, it’s best to book your accommodation ahead.
Where to Stay
Ideally, choose a property right by the beach overlooking Mirissa Bay. Options include the likes of Lantern Boutique Hotel which are only around 10 minutes away from where you can embark on whale watching. Additionally, such hotels will arrange the excursion for you which can even include aerial whale spotting tours too!
Keep in Mind
Whale watching excursions generally set off from Mirissa Harbour at around 6:00am or sometimes earlier, therefore, finding nearby accommodation is important! This adventure usually lasts for three to five hours; if you’re prone to getting seasick, take some seasickness pills about one to two hours before you head out to sea.
Amazing Sightings
Amongst the most stunning sights to witness when whale watching in Mirissa is the blue whale, the largest animal on the planet! You may also spot Bryde’s, killer, fin or sperm whales too. While whale sightings are not guaranteed, you also have a chance to encounter bottlenose, common and spinner dolphins, turtles and flying fish.
