Sri Lanka is a magnificent island with many wonders to experience throughout its surface. If you head towards the east of the island, the Batticaloa Lagoon is definitely something worth seeing.
The Lagoon
This is one of the largest estuarine bodies of water in the country, and stretches for 56km from Eravur in the Batticaloa District till Kalmunai in the Ampara District which is located towards the south of the country.
Batticaloa City
This is considered to be a major commercial city and a renowned tourist attraction due to the scenic beauty and cultural intrigue since it was the historic centre for Portuguese-Burgher Culture. There are many places to explore in the city, as well as things to do in Pasikuda, a famous resort town a short distance away, with many places of luxury accommodation such as Uga Bay.
Batti Lagoon Park
This is the first of its kind in Eastern Sri Lanka, and there are quite a few interesting activities available here. Children have a bouncy castle to play in while older visitors can explore the lagoon through paddle-boats or kayaks.
Bird Watching
Due to the high rates of biodiversity of this area, the lagoon makes for a brilliant bird watching site. Kurukkalmadam in particular is considered the optimal location to witness rare and captivating birds.
