While many tourists would make their way to the Southern coastal city of Sri Lanka, Galle, in their visit, Bentota, a few km away from Galle offers much the same – if not better view – and a range of activities while being comfortably close to both Galle and Colombo.
Things to do in Bentota are many. You could take a stroll in the amazingly sculptured Brief Gardens, the residence of world-renowned architect Geoffry Bawa; you could pay a visit to a number of temples in the area and learn about local culture; you could even visit a cinnamon plantation that is located on an island. But in order to do these, you will have to tear yourself away from the captivating beach itself, quite a difficult feat, considering what Bentota beach offers.
Of course, there is nothing like the tropical beach to relax by, with a book and a cold drink. You can take a dip in the gorgeous oceans or merely lie on the sand and let the waves wash over you. But for you who is not content with such simple pleasures, Bentota has a wide range of watersport activities. The island’s weather is perfect for a spot of windsurfing or wakeboarding. Many resorts in the area, including AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa, arrange windsurfing excursions as well as wakeboarding. Talk to one or the other and see when and how you can get yourself in the middle of the sea, holding on to a stretched piece of cloth, and wrestling with the wind and the waves. Or better yet, go deep down into the sea in a scuba diving expedition and admire the local aquatic flora and fauna. You can take your appreciation a little further by walking along the beach to Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project and holding a baby turtle in the palm of your hand.
Bentota is rapidly becoming popular among visitors due to its versatility. The beach is accessible, the people are friendly and there is plenty to do to sate the desire of every tropical adventurer.
