When it comes to beaches, Sri Lanka is certainly blessed with many, providing sun-kissed stretches of shore perfect for everything from working on that holiday tan to having fun in the sand and surf. The great thing is that the island’s different coastlines offer something different to experience, with beaches having their own identities.
The island’s south coast is known the world over for its pristine beaches offering perfect picture-postcard-like backdrops in which to chill by the Indian Ocean. Among the top beaches is the one in Bentota, featuring golden sands, fringed with palm trees. Ideal for relaxing, Bentota Beach is also a hotspot for those looking to try water sports. While the beach in Bentota certainly attracts a lot of tourists and locals, Unawatuna Beach offers a more laidback getaway. For a long time, this beach was one of the best-kept secrets along the south coast. While it may have lost a bit of that secluded feel to it over the years, it still offers a great beachside getaway and access to some happening nightlife both in Unawatuna and nearby Hikkaduwa. Getting to these destinations is easy as well. While you can opt for public transport be it bus or the scenic train ride, you also have the option of hiring self drive cars in Sri Lanka. Local companies such as Malkey Rent A Car provide a varied range of vehicles for you to choose from for your beach hopping adventures.
For a change of scenery look to head to the west coast where you will find another gorgeous stretch of shore at Negombo Beach. Just a short drive from the main international airport, this golden sandy beach area is perfect for relaxation, while those looking for some action-packed thrills can try their hand at kiteboarding. Being on the west coast also means you have the best vantage point to take in glorious sunsets.
Head further north to the east coast where the beaches vary both in feel and backdrops. Arugam Bay is a surfer’s paradise and is arguably the best spot for surfing in Sri Lanka. Also on the east coast is Pasikudah Beach, a quiet coastal haven which is protected by a bay that provides safe and relatively shallow waters for swimming. Come dawn, the beach is the perfect place to take in a magnificent sunrise as well.
