Your arms feel a bit tired, yet you keep paddling; the glorious tropical sun overhead and the comfortingly warm water beneath. You scan a playground of pure azure for that telltale sign. The wind picks up and you see it coming. What you have been waiting for. The perfect wave! Surfing holidays to Maldives provide plenty of thrilling moments worth experiencing
Though the waves here are not powerful as some of the world’s other surfing destination, make no mistake there are some fabulous swells and lots of barrels. The best surfing spots can be found in the Central, Male and South atolls, home to different spots that each has its own characteristics. If you are planning to do some serious surfing, look to stay at resorts within easy reach of these surfing hotspots. Travel specialists like Vacation Maldives can help arrange a stay at such resorts. So what are some of the best surf spots in Maldives?
When it comes to the Central Atolls there are many options to consider. Featuring some wonderful barrels and a lefthander that is both fast and shallow, Finnimas is one spot to try. Another popular spot is Muli which has two different types of breaks; the outside break that has good swells and a right hander that features long walls, while the inside break offers a right-hander that is quite fast and comes with long walls as well. To experience a strong right-hander that has some super barrels, try Mikado especially during high tide.
The Malé Atolls have their own charm and surfing hotspots too. Within easy reach of Thulusdhoo Island, Cokes is characterised by its tubular right hand wave that is especially fun to surf when the swell picks up. It is suited for both advanced and intermediate surfing enthusiasts. Relatively close by you will also find Chickens (not the fowl, but the surfing point!) which offers swells that vary from three to ten feet. It has a left-hand wave that is long including a section where you can enjoy some good barrels. Also worth trying is Jailbreaks with its quite fast, right-hander that has long walls.
Last but not least are the South Atolls. Surfing experts and pros should definitely head out to Beacons, though a word of caution; do be careful of its reef that is rather shallow. Another surfing point to try would be Love Charms which features a left-handed, long wave that comes with hollow walls and small tubes. Known for its picturesque island backdrop, Castaways also provides some great surfing on its right-hander especially during high tide that leads to swells that are more than four feet.
