If you are travelling to the South Coast, the best beaches in the country await. Galle is the capital of the Galle District and it attracts both tourists and locals that are looking for a weekend getaway. Unawatuna is conveniently located nearby and offers ideal conditions for swimming. Therefore, one of the top things to do in Unawatuna is to go to the beach. Several hotels have cropped up, among them CoCo Bay Unawatuna, along with some tiki style bars and beachside eateries. The main Unawatuna Beach has become extremely popular, so if you are looking for a quieter alternative, head to Jungle Beach.
Jungle Beach is a much smaller beach in comparison. It remained secluded until very recently because a fairly challenging hike was required to reach it. Latterly, a set of steps was introduced to save visitors hiking all the way around the peninsula. The beach has since seen more beachgoers. A small eatery has been set up on Jungle Beach and a number of sunbeds. The eatery serves Sri Lankan snacks, as well as sandwiches and chilled drinks. The crowds gather in this section, while other areas are less congested. Leading off Jungle Beach, the bay is shallow and waters are mostly calm.
High above the beach is the Rumassala Mountain. This rocky hill features the Japanese Peace Pagoda at the summit. The picturesque shrine was gifted by the Japanese Nipponzan-Myōhōji Order. A breathtaking view across the water is available at this vantage point and it is also where the steps leading down to Jungle Beach originate. Rumassala Mountain makes an appearance in the ancient Indian epic, Ramayana. The Monkey God, Hanuman throws away a giant piece of rock after using magical herbs growing on it to treat Rama’s brother Lakshman. This piece of rock is believed to have landed beside Jungle Beach and is now the mystical Rumassala Mountain.
