You can see more colonial style buildings in the surrounding area since the Kalutara city had once been the central spice trading point of Sri Lanka during the time of European colonization. Now it is one of the best coconut production centres. You can see many coconut cultivations alongside the beach as well as rural vendors selling coconut products like fibre-mats, carpets, ropes, and baskets. Another interesting site is the toddy farmers, who sometimes can be seen moving from one coconut tree to another along two thin lines of rope. They are called the ‘sap tappers’.
