Sri Lanka, known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, is a tropical island enriched by natural beauty. It is famous as an ideal destination for a beach holiday, having long stretches of pure and undisrupted golden beaches skirting the island. Traveling down south from the capital city of Colombo, a little further to 40 km you will reach the city of Kalutara. It has one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka, which is the reason that many luxury hotels and beach villas like Turyaa Kalutara are located in the area. Kalutara hotels are well known for their hospitality and comfort while maintaining a reputation as a budget-friendly and money worthy holidaying option among tourists. The food choices are out of the world, with a wide variety of seafood platters.
The icons of Kalutara City are the sacred Buddhist temple called Gangatilake Stupa, and the adjacent Kalutara Bodhiya that you will find right after the bridge over the famous ‘Kalu Ganga’. Even locals who are traveling pass this will make a quick stop to worship and offer small donations to the temple as a well wishing for a safe journey. Kalutara District is divided into two parts, namely Kalutara-North and Kalutara-South. The beach in the Northern part is known to be more beautiful and serene. You can see more colonial style buildings in the surrounding area since the Kalutara city had once been the central spice trading point of Sri Lanka during the time of European colonization. Now it is one of the best coconut production centres. You can see many coconut cultivations alongside the beach as well as rural vendors selling coconut products like fibre-mats, carpets, ropes, and baskets. Another interesting site is the toddy farmers, who sometimes can be seen moving from one coconut tree to another along two thin lines of rope. They are called the ‘sap tappers’.
