If you’re in Sri Lanka and you want to go scuba diving, the south coast of the island towards Galle provides some of the best locations for the sport. Want to know more about this?
1) Hikkaduwa
Once known for its amazing coral reefs and its abundance of beautiful tropical fish, today most of the coral reefs in Hikkaduwa have been destroyed. The fish, however, are still there, making this an excellent place for scuba diving. You’ll also be able to explore some amazing shipwrecks.
2) Mirissa
An excellent choice regardless of your skill level, you’ll find many dive centres in Mirissa that offer courses and certification to help you out. Here you can rent equipment and get tank refills as well. Highlights of diving here include the opportunity to spot whales, turtles and even dolphins. While Galle attractions are plentiful, diving here is definitely a much sought-after activity.
3) Kalpitiya
Diving at the protected Kalpitiya coral reef is both a unique experience and a perfect one. You’ll be able to spot various small fish, eels and maybe even the occasional octopus. If you visit during the season you might even get to see sperm whales and dolphins. There’s plenty of great accommodation in the area if you’re looking around, like the South Lake Resort for example.
4) Unawatuna
The main diving destination on this side of the country, here you’ll be able to witness marine life such as batfish, napoleon wrasse, various colourful coral fish and even golden moray eels.
