Arugam Bay in particular has hosted a number of international and local surfing competitions. The southern coastal beaches, closer to accommodation properties such as Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort are quite popular for beginners and intermediates.
When to surf?
Being a tropical country, the island enjoys more than its fair share of bright sunny days with clear blue skies and excellent swells outside the surfing season. However, the most ideal months are from November to April in the south coast and from May to October in the east coast.
Wave Selection
Selecting the best waves always come after some experience. Walled up waves are faster where as slow waves will take you at a slower pace.
Clear Wax
Scrape off any wax from your board, as the smoother the board; the smoother you’ll be able to break through each wave.
Change fins
Each fin type can have an effect on the surfer’s speed. Make sure you know which fin suits you the best.
