Hikkaduwa is a coastal town that is quite popular among sun seekers and beach lovers and for good reason at that! With long shores of golden sand and ocean waves that pique the eye of the thrill seeker, not to mention, the luxury hotels lining the beach, this is the ideal destination for a dose of sun and sea. For the surfers out there, if you are planning to visit Hikkaduwa, here are a few pointers to help out.
When to surf in Hikka?
The peak surfing season in Hikkaduwa or “Hikka” for short is from November to April. Most days are sunny throughout this period with offshore easterly winds and great S-SW swells. May to October however can be rainy and waves become unpredictable… it’s best to stay out of the waters during this time period and head to Arugam Bay instead.
Surf Spots in Hikka

Moving towards the northern part of the beach, you’ll find that swells are more intense and ideal for experienced surfers. The southern part is best for beginner breaks. Some of the best surf spots in the area include; North Jetty, Beny’s, Main Reef, Narigama Beach, Rathgama and Galle.
Surf Lessons
So you’ve never surfed before and yet the waters of Hikka entice you? No problem! Surf schools like Hippy Surf Camp offer 2-hour lessons, however, it is a little on the expensive side at $60 per person. Blue Surf also offers lessons for 2 hours at the rate of $20 per person. This is one of the best things to do in Hikkaduwa, so don’t miss out!

While there are a few surf camps with packages specifically for surfers in Hikka, there are also comfortable luxury hotels like the famous Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon available for a memorable stay during your visit.
