Manta rays are one of the most elegant giants of the ocean and are a sight to behold for marine enthusiasts and ocean adventurers. There are several spots from where you can witness these magnificent creatures, but one of the best is the Hanifaru Bay in the Maldives which features one of the largest gatherings of manta rays in the world.

About the Hanifaru Bay
The Hanifaru Bay is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Baa Atoll in the Maldives. It is a protected area because of its rich biodiversity which features mangroves, corals, reef-based fish species, turtles, sharks and manta rays.
Manta Rays at the Bay
While the Bay is known for being a nursery ground for grey sharks, the period from mid-May to December draws in hundreds of manta rays. During this time the reef fills up with plankton which attracts manta ray masses for feeding. This occurs due to the structure of the bay’s outer reef which sucks in plankton-filled water into shallow channels.
Why Is It Unique
Manta rays are known to be calm feeders who follow a pattern of swimming close to the surface to funnel in the food. However, this behaviour changes during the Hanifaru Bay manta season. Due to the confined space at the bay and the large number of mantas that arrive there, a feeding frenzy occurs making for a rare and mesmerising spectacle.
Visiting the Bay
As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Bay is heavily protected with rangers constantly patrolling the bay. Diving is also prohibited and there is a limit of five boats allowed at a time, each for 45 minutes. A strict speed limit must be followed and a certified guide must accompany visitors. Tourists staying at hotels and resorts like The Nautilus Maldives will have the perfect chance to visit the bay as guided tours are provided that adhere to all guidelines.
