Referred to as the upscale area of Bali, Seminyak on the west coast of Bali north of Kuta and Legian, is where luxury accommodation, fashionable restaurants and bars, high end spas and boutiques flourish. This air of elegance and luxury seems to have rubbed off on the beach as well. The area here is much less frenetic than the other popular beach areas of Bali.
Seminyak’s beach, an expanse of grey volcanic sand stretches away in both directions, as far as the eye can see. Coupled with its clear blue water, unspoiled natural environment and legendary sunsets it is clear why several thousand people come here each year to walk on its soft sand and to enjoy the sun and waves. Besides sitting under beach umbrellas surveying the scene or getting a tan there are plenty of activities to occupy visitors to the beach. Horseback riding could be one of these as there are excellent stables located close to the coast with a range of horses that can be rented for quiet canters on the beach and for exploring the area. Kite flying is another as there is always a stiff breeze around. Sunset is a favourite time here when Seminyak’s famous beach front bars are crowded with beautiful people for whom it is a ritual to watch the sun go down from a chaise lounge, with a drink in the hand, listening to the DJ’s latest chill mix. Many people in the bars and on the beach have taken up residence in Seminyak charmed by the surroundings and the leisurely pace of life.
The area also has a reputation as being perfect for intermediate surfers. Here surfers can enjoy the waves minus the crowds. The best time to catch the waves is said to be in the early mornings. For impromptu surfers, the price of hiring a surf board is the same as in Kuta.
Although Seminyak has its share of impromptu cheap bars that spring up in the evenings, the area is known to have some of the best beachside dining choices in Bali with many world class restaurants headed by celebrity chefs dishing out a range of top quality cuisine. Many have beach views though not directly on the beach where toes can be wriggled in the sand.
