A beach surrounded by black sand may not be too appealing as everyone expects golden sands or even white sands. But, in Langkawi, Pantai Pasir Hitam has black sands- quite unbelievably!
The scientific belief
They say this blackish colour of the sand is due to some minerals that get washed down to the beach from the nearby mountain ‘Raya’. Some also suggest that the cement factory located close by causes pollution and the odd colour is all because of that.
The famous myth
This myth is about a deadly fight between a Garuda (both a bird and a human) and a Roman prince. According to the legends, this prince has fought with the beast to save his princess who had been kidnapped. The fight caused the sand to turn black.
The other belief
This story is about a mermaid who belonged to an underwater kingdom. This mermaid has come to the land in search of love and this has created a battle between the two worlds. This fight (which involved fire) has made the sand all blackish.
Visiting the beach
During your stay at Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa which is indeed the best hotel in Pantai Cenang, you may easily visit this black sand beach.
