Negombo is the first town you come across after you land at the Bandaranaike International Airport. It is a great teaser of all that awaits you on a paradise island with its multicultural background, colonial influences, pretty beaches and more. Here is what you should look for.
1. First Beach Resort
The golden Negombo beaches make this town the first seaside resort on the island. Thus, it makes for a great place to begin your adventures in Sri Lanka. It is only 15km from the airport and has a plethora of pf great hotels like Amagi Aria where you can get over your jetlag.
2. Colonial Roots
Negombo was a popular port for the Portuguese, Dutch and British to export the prized Ceylon cinnamon to their countries from cinnamon plantations further inland. You can see the colonial influence all over the town.
3. Fishing Town
But before becoming a resort, Negombo is first and foremost a fishing village. It has some of the freshest seafood that you will find in the streets as well as on the menus of Negombo hotels.
4. Catholic Influence
The centuries of Portuguese rule left deep Catholic roots in the town. Even today, there is a large community of Catholics in the area and as such plenty of towering cathedrals.
