Bentota, which is the water sport capital of Sri Lanka, is situated just 64km away from Colombo City and can be reached by road on the Colombo – Galle Main road (A2) or by rail. Bentota is situated across the Bentara or the Bentota Ganga, which means Bentota River. The town is rural and sits underneath an umbrella of palm trees and other flora.
People are spoilt for choice from snorkelling and scuba diving along the Barberyn reef, to visits to a distant shipwreck. Wind surfing gives you a rush with the wing buffeting at your face and the adrenalin rush which makes it exciting. Water skiing is the brother to wind surfing. It is for the more adventurous of spirit since it involves a bit more speed than wind surfing. For the crazily adventurous type who thrives on speed, jet skiing is the activity for them, and if you still require more excitement, the squalls of the Indian Ocean offer just that. Jet skiing amidst them would give you the rush that you relish.
If you’re travelling as a family and don’t want to venture too far in search of activities, there are plenty of Bentota hotels that offer entertainment the whole family will enjoy. A popular choice among families is Bentota Beach by Cinnamon that gives you options like Banana Boat rides or you could even catch a movie together as a family at The Kids Club.
For those who enjoy the calmness of fishing, a day excursion would be the best, with the promise of lake fish as reward. They could also opt for deep sea fishing through the local marina, or go canoeing down the river whilst taking in the beauty of the mangrove forest, and fish at the shallow pools which is home to schools of small fish.
